Every year, the Rennes Métropole Film Festival invites the public to explore a city through the lens of cinema, revealing the many facets of its identity, history and culture. For its 38th edition, Travelling will be heading to Naples, a fascinating city where past and present, splendour and chaos, reality and imagination intertwine.
Clair Obscur will present a kaleidoscopic view of the capital of Campania, in an attempt to capture all the cinematic facets of this global city dominated by Mount Vesuvius and steeped in millennia of history, where stereotypes (often negative) and traditions (often romanticised) are among the first impressions conveyed to the public. Over the years, Neapolitan cinema has responded to these stereotypes in various ways.
Firstly, by embracing them, with so-called ‘popular’ film genres: the melodramas of the silent era (the work of Elvira Notari); the musicarelli of the 50s and 60s – a sub-genre designed to promote the records of fashionable singers or to capitalise on the musical hits of the moment – or the B-movies of the 80s and 90s centred on the Camorra. Although often dismissed on the grounds of an overly rigid distinction between ‘high’ and ‘low’ cinema, these films nonetheless depict a reality and deserve to be rediscovered.
Secondly, by deconstructing and analysing them to show us what lies behind the scenes, such as in arthouse cinema (Eduardo De Filippo, Francesco Rosi, Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Mario Martone, Paolo Sorrentino), or through the offbeat perspective of Antonio Capuano and the generation of other Vesuviani (Pappi Corsicato, Antonietta De Lillo, Stefano Incerti), or, for the past two decades, through the language of contemporary documentary (Leonardo Di Costanzo, Gianfranco Rosi, Maurizio Braucci).
And finally, by playing with them. The characters of Totò and Peppino De Filippo, the social comedy of Massimo Troisi and Luciano De Crescenzo, and the ironic and bitter tone of Lina Wertmüller’s films, as well as the performances of great actresses – above all Sophia Loren – in classic Italian films (The Gold of Naples; Marriage Italian Style; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) have often turned the stereotype on its head, using it as a means of reinterpreting reality.
Travelling will showcase numerous past and present talents of Neapolitan cinema, whilst also exploring this iconic southern Italian city that has been the theatre of political and social struggles, a character in its own right that endures and reinvents itself on the fringes.
Offering an invitation to embark on a journey, Travelling explores new frontiers of cinematic art through meetings with filmmakers, previews, screenings with live music, shows and exhibitions.
