A Journey Around the World

From cities to global cities

Globe-trotting is in the Travelling film festival’s DNA. Ever since its very earliest days, it has explored the cinematographic planet city by city. For its 30th edition, it is inviting audiences to set sail for a never-before-seen destination: global cities.

If the 19th century was the era of empire and the 20th the era of nation states, the 21st will be the century of the city, as Wellington Webb, Mayor of Denver, put it in 2009.

Travelling isn’t run by geographers or historians, but passionate cinephiles. It endeavours to piece together a story around its favourite subjects – film and cities – while keeping one ear open to the zeitgeist. The 30th Travelling festival is an avowedly subjective journey across five continents, guided by the most ideal of maps.

In keeping with its curious nature and hunger for new discoveries, Clair Obscur is opening the way to multiple destinations via other categories of the festival. These categories reflect all the different aspects of contemporary cinema: Special Showings (new films and previews, with a spotlight on Romanian cinema as part of the France-Romania season) – Music and Cinema, with four specially created cinematic concerts – The Junior series (sponsored by Pierre-Luc Granjon) – Digital Mutations (immersive virtual reality cinematic experiences and Doug Trumbull, special effects maestro on 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner and more) and À L’Ouest! (spotlight on Tita Productions and heritage with the Cinémathèque de Bretagne). All these different categories demonstrate how Clair Obscur is continuing to invest year-round in cultural events for varied audiences, as well as in all kinds of cinematic life in western France.

Now in its 30th edition, Travelling has crisscrossed the globe to tell stories in the heart of cities from London to Montreal, New York to Jerusalem, via inner city areas, imaginary towns and even midnight metropolises. To celebrate this journey, Clair Obscur has invited audiences to take a look back at the festival’s previous programmes and vote for their ten favourite movies. Discover (or rediscover) their selection on the big screen!

See you soon in the heart of the city!
